Chirps and Cheeps

My son and I took a quick birding hike somewhere different today: down along Woodlawn Beach on Lake Erie. It was a short trip and we didn't see a lot of variety, but we enjoyed the sun and breeze on this first day of October.

Other than some Ring-billed Gulls, we didn't see any shorebirds. There were several Turkey Vultures in the mix, though. When we headed up a path that took us along a little creek, we heard a beautiful song of a Carolina Wren. It reminded me of spring! We found the little songster and got some nice views through our binoculars of him.

After that, we found many Golden-crowned Kinglets in a little wooded area, followed by some White-throated Sparrows. Gray Catbirds were in abundance everywhere and along the path we followed, we also saw some Northern Cardinals, Song Sparrows, Black-capped Chickadees, a Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpeckers, a Red-bellied Woodpecker (heard), and several unidentified quick movers that eluded our focus!
