Louisiana Waterthrush in Chestnut Ridge Park

After work today, I tried to find a Louisiana Waterthrush in Chestnut Ridge Park. I've tried in vain before but, since they're known to nest there and since I've gotten some new tips on how to find them, I was filled with a renewed vigor to give it another shot.

I was told the Louisiana Waterthrush likes rapidly moving water, unlike its counterpart, the Northern Waterthrush, who likes stagnant or still water.  So, using that as my guide, I started out under one of the metal bridges not too far from the park entrance. I climbed down a rather steep hill and then followed the creek for a little while looking for some faster currents.  As I came very slowly and quietly around a bend in the creek, right there in front of me was a pretty little Louisiana Waterthrush doing a perky, tippy dance along a fallen log over the creek. I slowwwwwwly reached for my camera, but the waterthrush saw me and quickly darted to the trees. S/he stuck around for a little while, though, and I patiently waited for it to appear here and there while I grabbed the grainy photos below.  Forest photography is challenging enough - and these fast moving little creatures don't help! One of these days, I'll go back and try again...

Later, while walking up over the ridge, I saw another Louisiana Waterthrush. I found this one by ear and very quickly as I was still tuned-in to both their song and their chirp.

And thank you to all who have given me tips on finding the Louisiana Waterthrush: Doug Happ, Betsy Potter, Joe Mitchell, and Peter Yorg (hopefully, I didn't forget anyone). All that information was very helpful and paid off today.  Thank you!!!

This makes FIVE days in a ROW that I've gotten a life bird. I've never had a streak like this before and I'm excited!
