  April Surprise - Pine Siskins!

Imagine my surprise when a confusing cacophony of whining American Goldfinches, House Finches, and the pretty songs of Purple Finches were joined this morning by a buzzing that I nearly forgot!  Sure enough, outside my window and on the nyjer thistle socks, were several Pine Siskins!  Since we've been enjoying a much warmer than usual spring here in WNY, I was so amazed to see them today.  It seems very late for them to be passing through our area.  I figured they'd be long gone up north by now.  There were at least 6 of the little guys that came back and forth all morning and afternoon to our Orchard Park feeders.  What an unexpected treat!

What a pretty bird! How did you ever identify him?

I actually heard and recognized their sound before I even saw them. It's pretty memorable, kind of like a zipper being zipped up real fast - and loud! I remembered it from last winter when they came by. I was afraid we wouldn't get to see these guys at all this year.
