Taking advantage of a cool but sunny day, two of my children and I headed out to Evangola State Park to see what we could see.
As we drove around the park entrance and the main road looking for parking and trails, the bird activity on the side of the road was amazing! I was excited! Birding looked promising! Unfortunately, I was wrong.
Once we got into the park, things quieted down substantially. Near the beginning of the trail we saw an unidentified warbler, mostly yellow with some streaking. Maybe a Magnolia... Shortly after that, we got some wonderful views (no photos, though!) of a Golden-crowned Kinglet, lifers for my kids. I saw a male Hooded Warbler in the same area and we enjoyed an overhead fly-over of a Red-tailed Hawk, obviously on the hunt. A Pileated Woodpecker taunted us with its "laughing", but we never were able to lay eyes on it.
Other than some Northern Flickers, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Robins, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Gray Catbirds, and many Black-capped Chickadees, not much else was seen. It was a great time, though, and I think, had we known right where to go first-off, we may have hit the early morning "rush" and seen a bunch more. Next time!
