  Birdsong Birding Cut Short

My late afternoon trip to Birdsong ended sooner than I expected today when heavy, dark rain clouds and gusts of winds threatened to soak me and my camera as I was just making my way around the first pond.  I should've gone earlier in the day as it was a beautiful fall day.  And it had taken nearly a week to get back for another opportunity too!

My short trip yielded some nice birds, though; Ruby-crowned Kinglets were in abundance, along with some Golden-crowns, Black-capped Chickadees, Chipping Sparrows, Cedar Waxwings, Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Brown Creeper, Blue Jay, a pair of Juncos, a Turkey Vulture, House Sparrows, and at least 30 Canada Geese.  I'm getting good at audibly recognizing Carolina Wrens - I heard one today and knew what it was immediately!

I was surprised to still find Yellow-rumped Warblers; I thought they may have all left during the week, but there were many still around.

I just added spring and fall migration charts, by the way, thanks to Gerry Rising.  The fall chart contains the average departure dates for many species leaving or passing through the WNY area.  The Yellow-rumped Warbler isn't on there, so I'll have to find out when that species typically leaves and add it. I had been looking all over for such a chart and was thrilled to find one on Gerry's site - and very glad I am able to share it.

Although my birding ended too soon today, I came away with the best photos of Ruby-crowned Kinglets to date!

Thanks so much, Marie. I'm using a Canon 7D now with the 70-200mm lens. Now I want a 400mm! I guess that's always how it goes!
